OAC Spring Cleanup w/Venture Scouts

On Saturday, April 10, 2010, youth from the Venture Scout Crew #747, along with neighborhood volunteers participated in a Spring cleanup at the OAC. In 4 hours, 31 volunteers and staff were successful in 1) removing 1/10 acre of invasive Privet, 2) removing approx. 400 cu.ft of brush debris, 3) clearing debris from 1.2 miles of trail, and 4) cleaning debris from roof and gutters. Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 years of age OR 13 years of age and have completed the eighth grade and under 21 years of age. Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Venture Scout Crew #747 - Intergenerational Dialogue -  is led by Southwest Atlanta's very own Rev. Will Rogers and his wife Janice Sykes-Rogers.

 
OAC to serve as official U.S. Census Bureau site

As part of an overall effort to make answering the census as easy as possible, the Census Bureau has developed numerous ways of providing support to people. This support includes walk-in Questionnaire Assistance Centers (QAC's). The Outdoor Activity Center will serve as a US Census Bureau Questionnaire Assistance Center (QAC). Operating dates are March 19, 2010 - April 19, 2010; Operating hours are Sun. (3pm-6pm), Tue. (6pm-8pm), Wed. (4pm-8pm),  Fri. (4pm-8pm), Sat. (5pm-7pm).

The QAC's are located in communities that have historically been undercounted in the census. These centers may be located in churches, community centers, grocery stores, recreation halls, libraries, or other places in the community that are convenient to residents.

L.E.A.D Service Day at OAC

On Saturday, February 27, 2010, (15) youth and (5) adults from L.E.A.D participated in a cleanup at the OAC. In less than two hours time, the group was successful in removing 1/8 acre of English Ivy resulting in 30 lawn compost bags, and approx. 200 cu.ft of brush debris. (see photo gallery)

L.E.A.D. (Launch-Expose-Advise-Direct), is a nonprofit organization located in Atlanta, Georgia, led by former professional baseball player (and Atlanta native) C.J. Stewart. The organization is committed to having a significant impact on the number of inner city middle and high school student/athletes playing competitive baseball and preparing them to compete for college baseball scholarships. L.E.A.D. trained young men are knowledgeable about the game, but are also committed to service in their communities. L.E.A.D. commits their youth to (1) service day per month

 

 

 
NPU-S hosts Post Election Forum at OAC

On Thursday, February 25, 2010 (6:00 pm - 7:30 pm),  Neighborhood Planning Unit - S (NPU-S) hosted a "Post-Election Forum" at the Outdoor Activity Center. The forum was designed to provide a setting where neighborhood organization members could discuss community issues and possible solutions with city council representatives.

Government representatives in attendance included City Councilmember Cleta Winslow (District 4), City Councilmember Joyce Sheperd (District 12), Mr. Sidney Allen (Representative of Councilmember H. Lamar Willis, Ms. Kristina Garcia-Bunuel (Representative of Councilmember Michael J. Bond), State Representative Ralph Long III (State District 61). Atlanta School Board Representative Mr. Khaatim S. El (ABE District 2) moderated the forum. (see photo gallery)
